The Oracle of Delphi in Greece
Delphi in Greece and its oracle was one of the most sacred places in the ancient world. Situated in the breathtaking surroundings by the mythical Mt. Parnassus, where Pan and the nymphs lived, it is still an enchanting site. The ancient Greeks believed that Delphi was the centre of the world and in the oracle was foretold the future of kings and common men.
Hellenique Mythology IS Cosmology: Although Delphi had been dedicated to many deities before him, Gaea, Themis and Phoebe, Apollo is the god most connected to the place. Delphi, were in ancient times an important political, cultural and religious center, a symbol of unity for the Hellenic world for many centuries, and were the headquarters of the famous oracle of Apollo.
The place originally called Delphi – the ancient Greek word meaning “womb belly” – because of its shape or because there worshiped during the Mycenaean era mother – goddess Earth. Also, the name “Delphi” refers us to Delphi, who was the son or Poseidon or Apollo, and brother of Parnassus. The former Delfos had invented the divination by examining the viscera of sacrificial animals, and the Parnassus guessing by the way flying birds.
In Delphi, when mythology met two eagles sent from the ends of the universe, Zeus, one from the East and the other from the West, to find the center of the world. The history of Delphi lost in the mists of prehistory and in the myths of the ancient Greeks.
According to tradition, here was originally Sanctuary dedicated to Mother Earth, the keeper of which was the monstrous serpent Python, son and protector of the Earth goddess. Apollo, son of Zeus, he left Mount Olympus in order to kill the Python and conquer this beautiful and holy place. This god of light, grace, music and artistry, slaying Python, offered the Greeks the triumph of the rout of primitive instinct, pushing them simultaneously to create artworks in all areas of music, sculpture and writing. After the slaughter of Python, Apollo exile, to take the appropriate penalty and to atone. According to literary and archaeological evidence other gods Delphi even, sister of Apollo, Artemis(or Diana much later in Latin), Poseidon, Dionysus, Hermes, Zeus Poliefs, Health, Eileithyia (goddess of childbirth), the Graces and the Muses, goddesses of poetry and music. Father of the Muses was Apollo. Thus, the cult gained great prestige in Delphi, which was the most important center of Apollonian religion.
With Sanctuary linked the institution of Amphictyony, ie the federation of twelve tribes of Thessaly and Central Greece, originally with religious and later political importance. The Delphic amphictyony had control of the assets and operations of the sanctuary. Under the protection and management of the 6th century. BC, the sanctuary was made autonomous against its claimants (A Holy War), and increased its religious and political influence.

THE NAME IS DERIVED FROM ANCIENT GREEK PAN (ΠΑ͂, “ALL, ENTIRE, WHOLE”) AND GAIA (ΓΑΙ͂, “MOTHER EARTH, LAND”). PANGAEA OR PANGEA THE LATINIZED FORM “PANGAEA” (OF THE GREEK “PANGAIA”).(PRONUNCIATION: /PÆNˈDƷIː/) WAS A SUPERCONTINENT THAT EXISTED DURING THE LATE PALEOZOIC AND EARLY MESOZOIC ERAS.IT ASSEMBLED FROM EARLIER CONTINENTAL UNITS APPROXIMATELY 300 MILLION YEARS AGO, AND IT BEGAN TO BREAK APART ABOUT 175 MILLION YEARS AGO.IN CONTRAST TO THE PRESENT EARTH AND ITS DISTRIBUTION OF CONTINENTAL MASS, MUCH OF PANGAEA WAS IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE AND SURROUNDED BY A SUPER OCEAN, PANTHALASSA(PAN+THALASSA= SEA – ΘΑΛΑΣΣΑ OR ΘΑΛΑΤΤΑ IN DORIAN DIALECT). PANGAEA WAS THE LAST SUPERCONTINENT TO HAVE EXISTED AND THE FIRST TO BE RECONSTRUCTED BY GEOLOGISTS.
